Kandahar hijack: summonses for Tihar and Bombay jail officials

Patiala, Oct 30 (UNI) The Anti-Hijacking Court today resumed the hearing of the Kandahar hijacking case and summoned superintendents of Tihar Jail and the Central Jail of Bombay along with their jail records on November 18.

Inderjit Singh Walia, the designated judge of the anti-hijacking court, gave the order after hearing the arguments of the defence counsel of Abdul Latiff, B S Sodhi, who claimed that Latiff was lodged in Central jail of Bombay at the time of the hijack in December 1999.

He contended the records could establish the defence' claims that Latiff had not helped the hijackers of the Indian Airlines Plane IC-814.

Mr H V Rai, the defence counsel for accused Dalip Kumar Bhujel and Yusuf Nepali, sought summoning of the Superintendent of Tihar Jail to seek clarification from him as to on whose order were the three terrorists, who were lodged in the Tihar jail, were set free to secure the release of the passengers of the Indian Airlines plane IC-814.

The court, after hearing the argument put forth by the two lawyers, ordered the summoning of the two superintendents. They were asked to appear before the court along with the jail records on November 18, which was fixed as the next date of hearing.
