Indian scientist wins WMO award
New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) Retired National Aeronautics Ltd. scientist Joseph Pichamuthu was today conferred the 'Professor Dr Vilho Vaisala Award' by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) for his research on runway visibility.
Dr Pichamuthu received the 10,000-dollar prize at the 14th session of the WMO's Commission on Agricultural Meteorology which began here this morning.
The award is given by the Commission on Instrumentation of the World Meteorological Organisation, a specialised body of the United Nations.
Dr Pichamuthu conducted his research when he was working with National Aeronautics Ltd (NAL), a Council for Scientific and Industrial Research laboratory.
He retired as a deputy director of NAL a few years ago.
The award is for his research paper on directional variation of visual range for aircraft during take-off and landing.
Dr Pichamuthu is presently professor of electronics at the Vishweshariya Engineering College near Bangalore.
