Hema Malini doubts popularity of remake films

Bhopal, Oct 30: Casting aspersion on the remake of popular films of yesteryear, renowned actress and danseuse Hema Malini said she firmly believed that such movies will fail to achieve popularity.

''I believe that remakes cannot provide natural character to the scenes and the situations in comparison to the original film on the subject. Besides, there will be a room for doubt whether new actors will succeed in providing form to the expression of stars of that era,'' Hema Malini told reporters here today.

On whether any artist will be able to justify the role of 'Basanti' in the much-talked remake of yesteryear blockbuster 'Shole', she said there was no comparison between her and new 'Basanti'.

''Basanti to Basanti hi hai,'' she remarked.

Regarding her daughter Esha Deol playing the character of 'Basanti' in the remake 'Sholey', she said no such proposal had been received.

On virtual disappearance of classical dance from Indian films, she said the western culture was dominating the films these days.

However, expressing hope, she said, classical dance will return to Indian films.

Pointing out that film industry had become more professional, the Bollywood's Dream Girl said movies were churned out in three or four months these days, while during her time film production took several years.

Hema Malini, who was former National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) chairman, praised its work and hoped that it will not cease providing support to artists. On much-hyped ballet dance 'Draupadi', the danseuse said Draupadi had played an important role in keeping woman's side and symbolised female power. However, this aspect of her character has not received attention.

Asked about her role with superstar Amitabh Bachchan, she pointed out that he played every role superbly. After 'BagHhban', her next venture with the Big B was 'Babul' and she hoped that the movie will be received well by public.

Replying to a question about the entry of sons and daughters of actors in Hindi movies, she said there was nothing wrong in it.

She said her dream was to work with her daughter in the role of 'mother'.

On rendering dance performance at famous tourist spot Khajuraho, Hema Malini said both her daughters had done so and she wanted that every artist should also do the same.
