Fishermen rescued from sea; bad weather continues

Puducherry, Oct 30: The Coast Guard Personnel have rescued the fishermen reported missing from Karaikal region of the Union Territory yesterday police said today.

According to police, as many as 400 fishermen ventured into the sea on the morning of October 28, while most of them returned since the sea was rough, two boats with eight fishermen from Karaikal went missing.

However, one of the missing boat managed to return to the shore.

The Coast Guard continued their search for the other boat with rest of the four fishermen.

They found the anchored boat, which ran out of diesel, 35 kms away from Tarangambadi coast with only three fishermen in it. The Coast Guard rescued the fishermen and towed the boat to the shore.

Meanwhile, efforts were still on to trace the lone missing fishermen, who reportedly fell into the sea when the boat was caught in a strong wind. The Tamil Nadu coast was also alerted about the missing fishermen, the sources added.

Karaikal District Collector in-charge Mansoor received the three rescued fishermen and also ensured their treatment at Government General Hospital, Karaikal.

Meanwhile, report from Puducherry said heavy rain continued to lash the Yanam region of the Union Territory under the influence of the deep depression in the bay of Bengal.

The region received 28 cms of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 0830 hours, inundating several low lying areas. The relief operations have already started in the Yanam region under the supervision of Puducherry Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao with several people being shifted to safer places in schools and colleges.

Notably, Yanam region is also the constituency of the tourism minister.

All government departments were being kept at high alert to meet any eventuality, official sources said.
