Enough compensation must for agri land acquisition: Basu

Kolkata, Oct 30 (UNI) Calling for utmost restraint in acquiring multi-crop plots, veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu today asserted that the Government must pay adequate compensation for agricultural land taken over for setting up of industries.

''One has to be very cautious while acquiring two-crop or three-crop land. If such plots are acquired, enough compensation has to be paid,'' he told reporters after coming out of the CPI(M) state committee meeting.

He said partners of the ruling Left Front would meet tomorrow for an important discussion on the issue. ''The Left Front has to be united,'' he said.

Mr Basu's remarks came after the CPI(M)-led Government was under criticised by Front partners, CPI and Forward Bloc, over acquisition of 997 acres of agricultural land at Singur for Tata Motors' small car factory.

Mr Basu had reportedly emphasised at a Secretariat meeting of the party early this month that the Government should come clean on the deals with the Tatas.
