DMK denies PMK's charges of betrayal

Chennai, Oct 30 (UNI) The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), heading the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), today denied having betrayed its ally, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), in the indirect elections to various local bodies in the state.

Reacting to PMK founder leader Dr S Ramadoss' charge that the ruling DMK had violated ''coalition dharma'' and betrayed the party by defeating the PMK in 30 to 40 per cent of seats allocated to it, DMK Treasurer Arcot N Veerasamy told newspersons here that the DMK could never think of betraying its allies.

Detailing the list of local bodies won by the PMK with the help of DMK, he said ''there could have been some problems here and there in few places, but it is not fair on the part of Dr Ramadoss to act in a manner to disturb the honey comb.'' Mr Veerasamy said out of the five District Panchayats, the PMK had won four with the help of DMK. Same was the case in Municipalities, he said.

In some places, the DMK was helpless in ensuring the victory of PMK candidates as it could not compell the independents to vote in favour of PMK nominees, he said and asked ''where was the question of betrayal''.
