Customs seized 3 lakh US dollars in Mizoram

Aizawl, Oct 30 (UNI) Mizoram Excise and Customs officials seized more than 3 lakh US dollars from a passenger at Lengpui Airport last evening, police said today.

Police sources said acting on a tip-off, Customs officials carried out search in lugguge cabin of IC 211 flight from Kolkata and seized 3,30,400 US dollars in cash hidden at false bottoms of two airbags.

Thlabik (33), the accused, from Sangau village of southern Mizoram and currently occupying a rented house in the state capital, has been booked under section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962 and Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.

During interrogation, he has reportedly confessed of carrying the contraband for another man for a fee of Rs 8,000 only. He also admitted that it was not the first time he smuggled US dollars into the state.

The contraband seized was all US 100 dollar bills and they all seem to be new and genuine, which is worth of Rs 1,49,90,248, sources added.
