CBI says landmark verdict in Mattoo case sets benchmark for others

New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) Terming the awarding of the death penalty to Santosh Kumar Singh for the rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo a ''landmark'' judgement, the CBI today welcomed the Delhi High Court verdict saying it had set a benchmark for such cases.

CBI Director Vijay Shankar said the judgement of the Delhi High Court would set a benchmark for the trial courts and also the investigative agencies to introspect their functioning and for bringing about overall improvement.

In its statement, the investigative agency said, ''The accused had been stalking the victim for almost two years prior to the crime and a number of complaints had been lodged against him with the police in this connection.'' The CBI had nailed the accused through DNA Finger Printing.
