Truths From Gandhi 'Embarrassing' ?
New Delhi, Oct 28 (UNI) How it might be to have Mahatma Gandhi amidst us today, speaking out the truth ? 'Embarrassing' was the answer supplied by Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh at Gandhi Smriti today.
He said if Mahatma Gandhi were to speak out the truth it would have been embarassing for all of us, according to a Smiriti statement.
The occasion was a day-long convention on 'Satyagraha: A Media Perspective' organised by the National Institute of Social Communication Research and Training and Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti.
''We seem to have consigned Gandhiji to the observance of his birth and death anniversaries,'' the HRD Minister remarked, adding that ''We tend to forget what happened in between.'' ''If Gandhi were to come today, the media would not have known how to handle him,'' Singh said.
He stressed the need to reinvent Mahatma Gandhi and his thoughts and apply them in practical life. ''We need to remind ourselves about his relevance today in solving the problems of the society.'' The participants included GSDS Vice President Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, who mentioned the absence of media barons at the function.
A documentary on the plight of satyagrahis'-- 'Words on Water'-- was screened.
