TN: Teargas fired to stop DMK, AIADMK clash

Villuppuram, Oct 28: Police fired four rounds of teargas to disperse supporters of the ruling DMK, who tried to disrupt polls to elect the Chairman of the Tirunavalur Panchayat Union in this district of Tamil Nadu today.

Police sources said the indirect election to the Panchayat Union was stopped.

Ms Chandralekha of the opposition AIADMK enjoys the support of 11 councillors, while Ms Gunasundari of DMK has the support of nine members. When the process began, the DMK supporters prevented it, leading to tension in the area.

Repeated attempts by police to pacify them went unheeded, following which police fired four rounds of teargas shells to disperse them.

Tension prevailed in the area and police pickets were posted to prevent untoward incidents.
