New Delhi, Oct 28 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today announced that students will be nominated to Vidyalaya Kalyan Samitis (VKS) to make them much more vibrant and strong so that they function as a catalyst in improving government schools, which have already emerged as strong competitors to private schools.

She was delivering this valedictory address at a three-day 'Bhagidari' workshop organised to review the functioning of the VKS for further improvement of the academic environment and infrastructure of government-run schools.

This was the first time that representatives of the VKS from all 28 zones of the education department and officials of all departments concerned had congregated to discuss ways to further strengthen initiatives of the VKS which was launched in 2001.

622 VKS had been constituted which cover all 918 government schools.

Ms Dikshit, while commending the role of the VKS, said ''the members of the VKS have set an example of how the local communities' involvement can bring a transformation in the education system. Due to the efforts of VKS, maintenance of school buildings has improved considerably. The academic environment has improved and the students have been successfully involved in various campaigns. The CBSE performance of government schools have improved substantially''.

She expressed confidence that the suggestions received in the Bhagidari workshop would go a long way in further improving the functioning of VKS and all schools at large.

The Chief Minister stressed on the need of giving more thrust on co-curricular activities which would help students in their all round development.

She assured that an evaluation workshop would be organised after three months to assess the impact of the implementation of the selected suggestions.
