Sarubala Thondaiman reelected Trichy Mayor

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 28: Sarubala R Thondaiman of the Congress was reelected Mayor of Tiruchirapalli City Corporation today.

She polled 45 votes, while her rival and former floor leader in the Corporation N Mariam Pitchai of AIADMK secured 14 votes in the indirect elections held for the Mayor's post this morning. One vote was declared invalid.

Immediately after the election, she assumed office.

The Tiruchirapalli Mayorship was allotted to the Congress in the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), which secured a majority with 40 members in the 60-member house. The DMK, heading the DPA, is the single largest party with 26 members, followed by AIADMK 10, Congress nine, Independents five, MDMK four, CPM three, CPI two and DMDK one.

The DMK already nominated the outgoing Deputy Mayor M Anbazhagan for the post again. The election would be held this afternoon.
