Oscar Fernandes stresses on sports training for youth
Udupi, Oct 28 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Labour Oscar Fernandes today stressed the need for training youth to compete in international sports meets like Olympics with confidence.
Inaugurating the three-day inter-district sports championship 2006 here, he said the next Asian Games was scheduled to be held in India.
State Fisheries Minister B Nagaraja Shetty, who inaugurated the new track and the pavilion constructed at a cost of Rs 25 lakh, said the JD(S)-BJP coalition Government in the State had given more thrust to sports activities in schools to prepare students to participate in sports events. The Government had also decided to set up more sports hostels in the State.
He called upon public sector units, private companies and other organisations to adopt talented sportspersons, who could not afford to spend on training programmes.
The Minister said Mr Fernandes had assured to prevail upon the Centre to release the required funds to immediately repair the most damaged national highways in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
State Medical Education and Udupi district in-charge Minister Dr V S Acharya, who presided over, said the State Government had constituted a six-member committee, headed by Mr Vaidyanathan, for framing a sports policy. The Government had also decided to provide more funds to schools for sports activities, he added.
