Generate awareness about AIDS: Miss Universe

New Delhi, Oct 28 (UNI) Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera today called for enhancing awareness about HIV/AIDS to tackle ''the substantial rise'' in cases of the deadly disease in the country.

While attending the 'Annual Convocation 2006' of Young Womens Christian Association (YWCA) here, she said, '' We are here to promote awareness about AIDS and it is very important for me as a Miss Universe to do something for those people who are victims of this fatal disease.'' Ms Rivera, who is on a two-week AIDS awareness tour of India, stressed the need for getting rid of the stigma attached to the disease for effective management and urged the people to get themselves checked up.

''Please get tested, it is in fashion as testing is the only way to stop the spread of this virus,'' she added.

The Miss Universe was accompanied by designer Sanjana Jon and some New York-based social activists.

Sharing her experiences about India, Ms Rivera said, ''This is my first trip to India and I feel like at home. The food is fantastic and the people are very friendly.'' She also greeted children of Najafgarh Rural Development Programme on the occasion.

Zuleyka Rivera, a journalism student of University of Puerto Rico, won the Miss Puerto Rico crown in 2005 and the coveted Miss Universe in 2006.
