DMK, Cong candidates elected Mayors to five Corporations
Chennai, Oct 28 (UNI) Candidates belonging to the ruling DMK and its ally Congress were formally elected as Mayors to five Corporations in Tamil Nadu, indirect elections to which were held today.
After the two phase Local bodies poll on October 13 and 15, the elected Councillors elected the Mayors and Deputy Mayors for five of the six Corporations and to various Municipalities, Districts and Town Panchayats.
Of the six Corporations, DMK retained the Chennai, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Salem and allotted Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli to the Congress.
In Madurai Mrs Thenmozhi Gopinathan and Mr P M Kannan were elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively, while former DMK Legislator A L Subramanian (Mayor) and K Muthuramalingam (Deputy Mayor) were elected in Tirunelveli. Mrs Rekha Priyadarshini (Mayor) and C Panneerselvam (Deputy Mayor) were elected for Salem Corporation.
Mr Venkatachalam and Mrs Charubala Thondaiman were elected as Mayors of Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli Corporations, respectively, while Mr N Kartik and Mr M Anbhazagan (both DMK) were elected as deputy Mayors.
The elections for Chennai Corporation would be held tomorrow.
The DMK had announced Mr M Subramaniam and Mrs R Sathyabama as the Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral candidates.
In some places the elections were marred by stray incidents of violence and cross voting. The DMK had sacked as many as 18 office bearers in five districts for anti-party activities and issued show cause notices to three MLAs for defying the party directives in the elections.
Finance Minister and DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan said following complaints of violation of party discipline, show cause notices, seeking explanation, have been issued to Mr Appavu, Mr Udhayam Shanmugam and Mr K P Ramasamy.
