China's dam plans can affect Indian power scene
Guwahati, Oct 28: Union Power Secretary R V Shahi today said China's reported plan to dam the Brahmaputra river in its provinces could lead to serious concerns in the power generation scene in the country's Northeast.
China reportedly had plans to build a dam on the Brahmaputra and divert 200 billion cubic metres of water annually to feed its ageing Yellow river.
Mr Shahi said, ''The Ministry of External Affairs will take up the issue with their Chinese counterparts.'' Any proposal by China would involve not only environmental, seismic, forest and rehabilitation clearance, among others, but also the ties between the two nations, he pointed out.
He said, ''China's reported plans concern two nations (India and China) and international conventions will surely be followed if any such project comes through.'' The Union power secretary cautioned that the multiple power projects that are likely to come up in Arunachal Pradesh would be affected if China's plans materialised.
''The Centre will definitely settle the matter in the best interests of the people,'' he said.
