Western Command celebrates Infantry Day

Chandigarh, Oct 27 (UNI) The 59th Infantry Day celebrations began at Chandimandir today with Western Command's Chief of Staff Lt Gen A N Aul, the senior most serving Infantry officer in the Command, laying a wreath at the war memorial 'Veer Smiriti', in homage to the gallant soldiers.

Former Chief of the Army Staff Gen V P Malik, who was present on the occasion, also paid tributes to the matryrs by laying a wreath.

All senior Infantry officers, JCO's and other ranks in large numbers also paid homage at the war memorial.

Speaking at the special Sanik Sammelan, which followed the wreath laying ceremony, Lt Gen Aul highlighted the significance of Infantry Day and underlined the fact that no battle can be won without Infantry.

The Infantry contingents, he stated, have been successfully operating in the most difficult terrains, be it the heights of Siachen, the jungles of the northeast, the deserts of Rajasthan or the counter insurgency operations in the plains.

The firepower of Infantry has increased over the period of time, which, he affirmed, which would enable the Infantry to achieve success in any future operation just as in the past. Not only the Army but also the entire nation is proud the country's Infantry, Lt Gen Aul added.
