Sonia to launch Cong campaign for Mumbai civic polls in Dec

Written by: Staff

Mumbai, Oct 27 (UNI) UPA chairperson and AICC president Sonia Gandhi will launch the Congress campaign for the crucial Mumbai civic polls on December 28 at Shivaji Park in here.

December 28 is the 121st foundation day of the Congress, which was formed in Mumbai in 1885.

Last year, she had addressed party workers at a function in Mankhurd and in 2003 she addressed a mammoth rally at Shivaji Park sounding the bugle of the Congress campaign for the 2004 parliamentary elections.

The Mumbai civic polls scheduled for March 2007 are crucial for the Congress as it is making a determined bid to oust the Shiv sena which is ruling the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the last 20 years out of power.

Mumbai Congress spokesman Ajit Sawant said his party is not averse to alliances with secular parties provided seat adjustments are on its own terms. ''We are in the midst of galvanising grassroot level workers through block and taluka level meetings at present,'' he added.

Congress hopes are bolstered by ex-Shiv sena leader Narayan Rane's defection to the Congress. Mr Rane who is now Revenue Minister in the government hails from Sindhudurg district in Konkan and a large chunk of Marathi speaking people from the region reside in Mumbai.
