Srinagar, Oct 27: Life was crippled today due to one-day general strike called by breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) in protest against the continued presence of army in the state since 1947.

Shops and business establishments in the city, including Lal Chowk and Budshah Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, remained closed.

Work in government offices and other commerical establishments was affected due to general strike, called by the HC and supported by a number of other separatist and militant organisations.

Most of the educational institutions were closed.

A report from Baramulla said complete shut down was observed in the town, Sopore and Handwara, while it was partial in the frontier district of Kupwara.

The streets wore a deserted look as all shops and business establishments are closed and traffic off the roads.

Similar reports were also received from south Kashmir district of Anantnag.

It was on this day, the first batch of Indian army entered the Kashmir valley in 1947.
