Constable sent to poilce custody for possessing charas

Mumbai, Oct 27 (UNI) A local court here today remanded a police constable, posted at Arthur Road Jail, to police custody after he was caught in possession of 100 grams of Charas.

Sessions Judge B S Vasekar directed that Constable Shishupal Karjavkar (38) be kept in custody till November 3.

The Arthur Road Jail, in the premises of which, the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (TADA) Court is passing the verdict of the 1993 bomb blasts that rocked Mumbai, is under severe scrutiny and surveillance by the police.

The special police that has been keeping vigil here, informed the N M Joshi Marg Police Station's Senior Inspector Narsingh Sherkhan that they suspected Constable Karjavkar of holding prohibited substances. Inspector Sherkhan asked for the constable to be checked and found the 'charas' hidden in his socks.

The court was told that Constable Karjavkar has been posted to Arthur Road Jail since past four months prior to which he was at Ratnagiri.

The prosecution also told the court that in 2005, the accused in the jail were found possessiong gunpowder and the racket had been busted. This is the second such case to have come up at Arthur Road Jail.
