Congress to consult UPA allies on creamy layer

New Delhi, Oct 27: The Congress today said that it would take a collective stand in consultation with all the UPA allies regarding the Supreme Court verdict excluding the creamy layer in the SCs and the STs from the benefit of reservation in employment.

A clear stand on the issue will emerge only after consensus among the allies is arrived at, Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.

"As of now absolutely no view has been formulated by UPA allies," Mr Singhvi told reporters here, adding the question of taking a stand would arise only after UPA allies have been consulted.

The Left parties supporting the Congress-led UPA coalition Government, too, would be consulted on the creamy layer issue, he said replying to a question.

Mr Singhvi said the contexts of the statements issued by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Ram Vilas Paswan on this issue were different and there was no question of the Congress reacting to those statements.

To a question regarding the threat to the lives of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President APJ Abdul Kalam sent by someone through the e-mail from a cyber cafe in Kerala, the Congress Spokesman replied that it was a serious issue. However, he hoped the Kerala police would effectively deal with the issue going to the root of the matter.
