15 farmers commit suicide in the last 48 hours in Vidarbha

Nagpur, Oct 27 (UNI) As many as 15 farmers, including a woman, have committed suicide in Vidarbha in the last 48 hours.

According to an NGO, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), which works among farmers in the region, eight farmers ended their lives on Wednesday and seven others yesterday.

The 15 farmers who took the extreme step included four each from Yavatmal and Akola districts, three from Buldhana, two from Amravati and one each from Wardha and Nagpur districts, VJAS said in a press release here today. Among them was Laxmi Gaikwad of village Ganjegaon in Yavatmal district, it said.

VJAS activists have threatened to launch an indefinite hunger strike at Pandharkawada in Yavatmal district and other places in Vidarbha from November 6 to press their demand to have a fixed price of Rs 2,700 per quintal for cotton.
