Young scientist fellowship awarded to BU Reader

Tiruchirapalli,Oct 26 (UNI) Dr K Nataraja Seenivasan, Reader, Department of Microbiology at the Bharathidasan University here has been selected for the ''Young Scientist Fellowship'' award of Rs 12 lakh, by Science and Engineering Research Council(SERC) of the Department of Science and Technology(DST), New Delhi .

The Fellowship is fr carrying out research studies on Leptospirosis, according to a press release issued by the University Vice Chancellor Dr C Thangamuthu.

Dr Nataraja would carry out research on ''Combinatorial analysis of recombinant LIP, L32, effective detection of leptospire specific antibodies by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)''.

The study will focus on the molecular cloning of the leptospiral genes and further the development of recombinant proteins by using the leptospiral recombinant proteins. Various simple and quick diagnostic tools will be developed for the early diagnosis of leptospirosis, which is a prevalent disease in India, Dr Nataraja said.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, It is transmitted mainly from animals to the human beings, he added.

The SERC fast track scheme will be an asset for the ongoing leptospiral research in bio-medical diagnostic laboratory of the University, he said.
