WB experts to participate in Economic Conference

Lucknow, Oct 26: Experts from the World Bank, UNDP and Planning Commission will participate in a two-day 2nd Annual Conference of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal Economic Association (UPUEA) to be organised here from October 28.

Around 100 research papers will also be read in the conference being hosted by the Giri Institute of Development Studies (GIDS), Lucknow.

Themes selected for the discussion are: Human Development Status and Issues: Approach to the 11th Five Year Plan and Economic Reforms at the state level.

The focus of discussion will be on UP and Uttaranchal. Around 250 delegates from various universities and degree colleges will participate in the deliberations.

Prof D K Srivastava, former member of the 12th Finance Commission and presently Director Madras School of Economics, has been elected as the chairman of the conference.

GIDS director Prof A K Singh said the event will be inaugurated by eminent economist and former president of the Indian Economic Association, Prof T S Papola.

''The recently-formed UPUEA, fulfils a long felt need for creating a forum, where economists of the region could meet and discuss the development issues facing the region,'' he informed.

Prof G Nancharaiah, Vice Chancellor B B Ambedkar University, will preside over the inaugural session.

Professor S R Hashim, former member Planning Commission and former chairman UPSC will be honoured by the UPUEA on the occasion.

The valedictory address will be given by Prof R P Singh, VC, Lucknow University.

Other well-known economists expected to participate include Prof A K Singh, Prof Yashvir Tyagi, Prof Mohd Muzammil, Prof P N Mehrotra, Prof P K Choubey, Dr Phillip O'Keefe, Dr Ravi Shankar and Dr Santosh Mehrotra.

The first UPUEA conference was held at Varanasi in October last year.
