Puducherry, Oct 26 (UNI) Puducherry Lt Governor Mukut Mithi today called upon young sportspersons not to make winning the sole objective of participating in the national level competitions, eventhough winning is the ultimate goal.

Declaring open the week long Sub-Junior National Badminton Championship here today, Mr Mithi said the youth should utilise the opportunity to improve their skills and learn the vital factors of developing a steely mental frame to face competitions from equally skilled and even more talented opponents. Even if they could not fetch a medal, they should learn to take pride in their accomplishments and constantly try to improve their performances in future, he added.

Sports, besides imbibing in youngsters the values of discipline, responsibility, self-confidence and team spirit, played a vital role to tone up a young athlete in the middle school level to high school level. Sports has no class discrimination and it brought together the princess and common man, he added.

After cricket, badminton is the popular game in India Mr Mithi said.

Puducherry Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao, Legislator M A S Subramainain, All India Badminton Association Vice-President Ashok Bajaj were among others who participated in the inaugural function at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here.
