Mangalore, Oct 26 (UNI) Ms Vijaya Arun of the Congress, the counsellor of Kadri ward, was today elected as the new Mayor of the Mangalore City Corporation.
In the election held here today, Mr Abdul Salim (Congress), the counsellor of Falnir ward, was elected to the post of Deputy Mayor.
Ms Arun and Mr Salim secured 42 votes each against their BJP rivals Mariamma Thomas and Navinchandra who got 17 votes each respectively.
One member abstained from voting.
In the 60-member House, the ruling Congress had a total strength of 44, the Opposition 14 and there were two independents.
Yesterday, the Congress, in a keen contest, elected Ms Arun and Mr Salim as the official candidates for the two posts. While Ms Arun got 26 votes, Mr Salim and his opponent bagged 22 votes each. Mr Salim was selected as the party candidate by picking lots.
