Chennai, Oct 26 (UNI) The Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) will make all efforts to restrict the sale of ganja chocolates and ice creams in the city, Mr R Sekar, Inspector General of Police, Crime (SIT) said today.

Addressing press persons here, Mr Sekar said several complaints had been received on the sale of such products to college students.

''The NIB will initiate immediate action to control this menace,'' he said.

The Narcotics Branch of the Nagapattinam Police had seized 4.3 kg of heroin and arrested three people in this connection on October 24.

Mr Sekar said acting on information, a special team formed by Nagapattinam Narcotics Wing, DSP Iraniyan and led by Inspector Uma Shankar questioned the trio who were moving under suspicious circumstances in front of a cinema theatre with polythene covers in their hands.

As they tried to escape on seeing the police, the officials nabbed them and seized the heroin meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka via Vedaranyam. The contraband was sourced from Bangalore.

The arrested were identified as Sivakumar (45) from Ramnathapuram District, Munis alias Muneswaran (45) of Nagapattinam and Johnpaul (24) of Velankanni.

During 2006, a total of 930 cases were registered with NIB CID in Tamil Nadu and 939 persons arrested were sent to remand.

Over eight kg of ganja chocolate, 45 vials of tidigesic injection and other narcotics worth Rs 20 lakh were seized.
