Legislation for welfare of pvt hospital employees

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 26 (UNI) Kerala Labour Minister P K Gurudasan today told the state Assembly that the government would bring in a new legislation to improve the wages and service conditions of the employees in private hospitals.

Replying to questions by J Arunthathi and others, he said a law existed for their welfare, but it had not yet been implemented.

The government was considering to execute various welfare schemes, including setting up of a minimum wages committee and reinstate the Welfare Board for the private hospital employees, he added.

Stating that the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) government had exempted private hospital employees from the purview of the Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, Mr Gurudasan said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government would reinstate the Act.

On the exploitation of women employees in private hospitals, he said the government would take all steps to fix the working hours of women below 17 years from 0600 hrs to 1900 hrs, which was removed by the previous government.

Mr Gurudasan said the government was proposing to fix a minimum qualification for appointments in private hospitals and if necessary they would be provided training.
