Guwahati, Oct 26 (UNI) Asom Sahitya Sabha has suspended its general secretary for fraudulently withdrawing money from the organisation.

Speaking to mediapersons today, Sabha president Kanak Sen Deka said this decision was taken last night by the central executive of the Sabha.

''There are endless anomalies committed by secretary Dr Jagadeesh Chandra Patgiri. He has been removed. An inquiry committee has been set which will submit its report within two months,'' Mr Deka said.

The Asom Sahitya Sabha is a national organisation with goodwill cutting across languages, ethnicity and religions.''What happened in the past couple of years is shameful. This man single handedly tarnished the image of the Sabha. We are determined to cleanse the whole system and reform the Sabha,'' Mr Deka said.

''Unfortunately Dr Patgiri damaged the whole structure of the organisation,'' he said. Mr Deka, however, could not give details about the misappropriation.

''Let the investigation take its own way. The President's post is less powerful in terms of financial matters than the General Secretary's. Hence, he could do so much of damage, he said adding, ''We received three letters from former Presidents. Then we called the central executive and finally met yesterday,'' Mr Deka said.

The Sabha would now have a permanent secretary and a permanent secretariat to keep the accounts amd would run the administration.
