Modi Diwali gift to 'Samras' villages, hike in grant

Ahmedabad, Oct 25 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today gave a 25 per cent increase in the grant to the villages opting for 'Samras Gram Yojana' of the State government.

In a statment issued here, Urban Development Minister I K Jadeja stated that villages opting for the yojana and having a population of up to 5,000 will be granted Rs one lakh while those with a population of above 5,000 would get Rs 1.5 lakh.

The state Cabinet also decided that the villages which have opted for this yojana earlier and after October 2001 and want to go in for the yojana again would get additional 25 per cent grant.

The scheme was launched to elect the Panchayat members unanimously, he said. So far nearly 4,000 villages have opted for this yojana and about Rs 24 crore has been granted. The money has been spent mostly for constructing school buildings, providing drinking water, roads, street lights and sewerage and other basic facilities.
