Eid-ul-fitr celebrated in Meghalaya

Shillong, Oct 25 (UNI) Eid-ul-fitr, marking the end of the holy fasting month of Ramzan, was celebrated today with religious fervour and gaiety in Meghalaya.

Both young and old, offered prayers at various idgahs and exchanged greetings. The main Eid congregations were held at Laban, Mawprem and Fire Brigade idgahs in the city besides a number of mosques spread over the state.

Eid was also celebrated in Mahendraganj, Phulbari, Rajabala, Ampati, Resubelpara in Garo Hills, Dawki and Lad Rymbai in Jaintia hills, Umiam and Nongpoh in Ri-bhoi district of Meghalaya.

Police said prayers passed off peacefully in all places.

Priests and other Ulmas highlighted the importance of Eid which comes after a month-long fasting. Former Meghalaya minister and Shillong Muslim Union general secretary Sayeedullah Nongrum told reporters decision to celebrate Eid today was taken at a late night meeting on Monday last.

People were seen greeting each other. A large number of people from other religion also greeted their Muslims brethren.
