China to build dam on Brahmaputra, Arunachal Governor worried

Shillong, Oct 25 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Governor S K Singh has expressed concern over China's reported plan to build a dam on the Brahmaputra river and divert 200 billion cubic metres of water annually to feed its ageing Yellow river.

''I am worried with Beijing's plans to divert the water,'' Mr Singh said in an interaction with North Eastern Hills University students in the sidelines of United Nations Day celebration here yesterday.

''India should negotiate with China on this issue,'' he said, adding that he had suggested India's Union Secretary for Water Resources V K Duggal to sign a treaty with China on water.

Since the Bramhaputra is a major resource for India and the larger part of the river is under control of China, he said, ''India needs to negotiate with China about sharing water.'' ''We should have a treaty with China like the Indus treaty with Pakistan. Lack of foresight may hamper India's interest as the North Eastern states like Asom is fully dependent on the river,'' he said.
