60, including 23 women take oath as Corp. councilors

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 25 (UNI) Sixty elected members, including 23 women of the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation Office took oath as councilors here today.

At a simple function held at the Corporation Office premises, Corporation Commissioner B Balachandran administered the oath to the members of the third council at Tiruchirapalli, one of the six City Corporations in the state.

The prominent candidates included Sarubala R Thondaiman, the sitting Mayor and also a strong contender for Mayorship again as the Congress has been allocated the Tiruchirapalli Corporation by the DMK, District Secretary of the Congress Party, Jerome Arockiaraj would also be a contender for the Mayorship.

After the oath ceremony, the councilors attended a formal meeting at the council hall, presided over by Mr Balachandran, who announced that the council would meet on October 28 to elect the new Mayor and to choose the Deputy Mayor.

While assuring all the maximum co-operation from the officials, he solicited co-ordination from the council members enabling the government machinery to implement the various welfare schemes.

The composition of the City Corporation includes 26 DMK, AIADMK 10, Congress 9, Independents 5, MDMK 4, CPI 3, CPM 2 and DMDK 1.

Apart from the City Corporation Councilors, in Tiruchirapalli District, 4331 members have been elected to the Local Bodies in various capacities like Municipality Councilors, Town Panchayat Members and Panchayat Wards.

In another function held at the District Collectorate complex, District Panchayat Ward Members assumed charge in the presence of the District Collector Ashish Vachchani.
