Laxman wins Colombo Open title

Chennai, Oct 24 (UNI) International Master Rajaram Laxman of Chennai has won the Sri Lankan International Open chess title at Colombo, according to a Tamil Nadu Chess Association (TNCA) release here.

Laxman and another Indian Ram S Krishnan were tied for the top place with 7.5 points from nine rounds. Laxman, however, was declared the winner on better progressive tie-break score.

Five Indians participated in the competition and finished creditably. The third to seventh places went to S Satyapragyan, G C Anuruddha , Akshat Kamparia, V Romesh and Vinod Kumar. They finished with seven points each.

In all, 114 players vied for honours in the tournament.

Laxman and Ram shared the prize money of Rs 90,00. But the Gold medal and the trophy were presented to Laxman.

This was the second successive triumph in Sri Lanka for Laxman, the national Under-25 champion Laxman. The 1983-born Laxman had previously won the Kandy Open in July this year.

''I will be gaining about 12 ElO points from this event,'' he said.
