De Villiers half century helps South Africa to 219 for 9

Written by: Staff

Ahmedabad, Oct 24: AB de Villiers' fighting patient 54 and his 80- run partnership with Jacques Kallis saw South Africa cross the 200 mark after being put into bat by Sri Lanka in their crucial Super Eight Group 'B' match at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera here today.

South Africa finally, with a bit of slogging from Shaun Pollock and Robin Peterson, reached a respectable score of 219 for nine in their 50 overs thus setting Sri Lankans a target of 220 on a good batting pitch, the best this tournament has seen so far.

After asking the South Africans to bat the Sri Lankan opening duo of Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga justified the decision of their captain Mahela Jayawardene to field first as they rocked the South African top order with quick strikes.

Graeme Smith and Boeta Dippenaar who opened the batting for the South Africans in this crucial game, which both the teams need to win to stay in contention for a semi-final berth, started off cautiously.

Smith, however, looked like getting into top gear flicking Vaas for a boundary to midwicket. However, in the fourth over Smith played a nothing shot flicking Vaas straight into the hands of Sanath Jayasuriya at short midwicket to be dismissed for 10 with the score on 13.

Herschelle Gibbs, who joined Dippenaar, looked in good touch as he stroked three fluent boundaries of Malinga to put the South Africans on the road to a big score on one of the best wickets seen in this tournament so far.

Gibbs, but got a little too adventerous and tried to steer Lasith Malinga to the thirdman boundary, however, only managed to get an edge which was easily accepted by Kumar Sangakkara. Gibbs made an 18-ball 16 with three boundaries and the team score was 30 for two.

In the next over it became 30 for three when Dippenaar who faced 19 balls for his three runs tried to drive Vaas but managed a thin edge which was spectacularly taken by Sangakkara standing upto the stumps.

Following is the scoreboard of the Super Eight Group 'B' Champions Trophy match between Sri Lanka and South Africa played at the Sardar Patel stadium, here today.
