Damaged Taraka reservoir crest gate to be replaced in one month

Mysore, Oct 24 (UNI) Work on the damaged crest gate of Taraka reservoir in H D Kote taluk in the district has commenced after a lapse of two weeks and is expected to be completed in a month.

Irrigation department sources told UNI that cranes were used to remove the broken pieces of the crest gate, weighing about 25 tonnes. Tenders have been invited for building the new crest gate.

Crest gate expert Ramakrishniah, camping at the site, examined the broken pieces of the gate and felt that the gate was not to the specification as per the design.

The reservoir capacity was 3.93 TMC FT and after the mishap, nearly 1.73 TMC FT of water had drained into the river, damaging 270 acres of agriculture and horticulture lands and causing a loss of about Rs one crore. The government had paid a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to 350 farmers. The dam catered to the needs of nearly 30,000 acres of land in H D Kote taluk.
