BJP reiterates demand for establishing a Vidhan Sabha for Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Oct 24 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party today reiterated its demand for establishing a Vidhan Sabha for Chandigarh Union Territory.

There is a need for establishing a Legislative Assembly for Chandigarh which can address the grievances of people and fulfill their aspirations, BJP Legal Cell National Convenor Satya Pal Jain said while addressing a press conference here.

He said there was no forum to ventilate grievances of people at present and it was very difficult for the general public to meet the Administrator for redressal.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs in its report tabled in the both Houses of Parliament on August two last, had recommended that some kind of arrangement should be put in place in the Union Territory of Chandigarh which should be easily accessible to the public and which could effectively and adequately redress their grievances, he said.

Mr Jain urged the Government to give one-time relaxation to the building bye-laws in Chandigarh, as suggested by the Standing Committee, for the benefit of those who have made alteration/additions in their houses. Till then notices issued to those who have violated the bye-laws may be kept in abeyance, he added.

The BJP leader opposed the extension of jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation to 18 villages of the union territory and demanded that rural identity of these villages be maintained which was also suggested by the Standing Committee. He said there was no demand from the 18 villages for extension of jurisdiction of the municipal corporation.

Mr Jain demanded 23 per cent share of the tax revenue for the Municial Corporation. He said the Standing Committee had recommended that steps should be taken for early implementation of the Second Delhi Finance Commission recommendations for devolution of 17 per cent share of tax revenue untill the Third Delhi Finance Commission takes a decision on the devolution of 23 per cent tax revenue.
