Dabwali fire victims: Panel term extended

Chandigarh, Oct 23 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today extended the term of the Commission of Inquiry probing fire incident by another six months.

The Commission was constituted four years ago to determine the quantum of compensation to be paid to the victims of Dabwali fire incident in which over 400 people had died which mainly comprised children and women.

The term of the Commission has been extended by the High Court's Division Bench comrising the acting Chief Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar and Justice Surinder Singh Saron.

The Commission headed by Hisar-based Justice T P Garg, a retired judge of the Allahabad High Court, is also to decide as to who would pay the compensation amount.

The Commission, would now complete the assigned task by April 30 next year.

The Commission also submitted a status report regarding the work done so far.

Over 400 people mostly children and women had died due to a devastating fire that had engulfed the annual function of DAV Public School, Dabwali district Sirsa on December 23, 1995. A further hundred suffered minor to major injuries and were being treated even now.

The Haryana government had paid an interim ex-gratia of Rs one lakh each to the families of those who perished in the fire, besides, Rs 50,000 each to those suffering serious injuries. It was also looking after the medical expenses on the direction of the High Court. The fire was reported to have been caused due to alleged short circuiting of power supply.
