Teaching community condemn burning of colleges

Imphal, Oct 22 (UNI) The teaching community in the state and various organisations have condemned the burning down of two premier colleges.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has also condemned the incident.

Imphal College and the DM college were burnt down by some unidentified miscreants on Friday night.

The two colleges were allegedly burnt down by ''students'' demanding regular classes. After the state government's termination of all the part time lecturers academic activities were disrupted in the colleges.

DM College had valuable records preserved since 1946. All were destroyed, college officials said, and demanded a probe into the incident.

The Imphal College employees also demanded a probe and the college authority claimed goods worth Rs 31 lakhs were destroyed.

The state Cabinet held a marathon meeting last evening on this issue and decided to cancel termination orders of all the 466 part time lecturers. The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Mr Singh, also approved appointment of 84 regular lecturers in higher secondary schools.

The Cabinet has approved payment of arrear and salaries of approved teaching and non-teaching staff of aided colleges in accordance to ROP 1999 from January 1,1996 to 2000.
