Punjab & Sind Bank, BSF win; SAI lose in National Hockey qualifie
New Delhi, Oct 21 (UNI) Defending champions Punjab and Sind Bank mauled CISF 5-0, while Border Security Force (BSF) bounced back from their opening match loss to beat FCI 4-1 in the qualifiers (associate members) for the National Hockey Championship here today.
In the last match of the day, SAI suffered their second successive loss as they went down 1-3 against the Namdhari XI.
Punjab and Sind Bank, who opened their account without having to sweat it out on the field after getting a walk over from Customs in their first match, opened their scoring in the second minute through Mandeep Singh.
Leading 3-0 at half-time, the defending champions added two more goals in the second half to register a thumping victory.
Meanwhile, Sushil Kujur scored a brace as BSF put behind the disappointment of their opening match loss to ONGC to overpower FCI in their second match. BSF, who were let down by their penalty corner conversion yesterday, converted three chances today as they registered a comfortable 4-1 win in the match.
In the final match of the day, Gurpreet Singh scored twice in the first half as Namdhari XI sailed past Sports Authority of India (SAI) 3-1. Both the goals scored by Gurpreet came through penalty corners.
The consolation goal for SAI was scored by Shashikant in the 38th minute.
