Rains, thundershowers plummet mercury, usher cool climes in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) A fresh spell of light rains in the capital today ushered in cool climes in Delhi on the eve of Diwali, which marks the onset of Winter season.

Light rains hit the capital city early this morning, a development weatherman attributed to the influence of a fresh Western disturbance.

The rains and accompanying thundershowers, which followed a heavily overcast sky, led to a drop in mercury in Delhi.

While the minimum temperature dropped from 24 degree Celsius last night to 21 degree C, the maximum came plummeting down to 29.6 degree C, from 33 degree C yesterday.

Though only 2.4 mm of rainfall was recorded during the day, the showers and the accompanying Easterly winds brought about a coolness in the air.

Weathermen attribute the sudden turnaround in the weather conditions - from a dry weather and a cloudless sky in the last few days to a heavily overcast sky and light rains this morning - to a fresh Western disturbance.

Weathermen said that under the influence of the Western disturbance, scattered rainfall is likely over Western Himalayan region and plains of Northwest India, including Delhi, during the next few days.

For Delhi, the met office has forecast a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of one or two spells of thundershowers during the next 24 hours.

Also they have predicted that downward movement in mercury could continue in the coming days, indicating the onset of cool climes.

Experts feel the onset of cool weather could lead to the abatement of the Dengue menace as the Aedes mosquito which causes the disease breeds mosly in warm and humid weather.
