SC upholds reservation in promotion for SCs/STs

New Delhi, Oct 19: The Supreme Court today upheld the validity of the 77th constitutional amendment providing for reservation in promotion in government jobs for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe.

A five judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, however, said the 50 per cent ceiling in promotion for reserved categories has to be adhered to always and the creamy layers among the reserved categories has to be excluded for the purpose.
