Villagers pay homage to Kanshi Ram; tonsure heads

Kendrapada, Oct 18 (UNI) In a rare show of love and respect, dalits in seven coastal Orissa villages tonsured their heads to pay tribute to the departed Bahujan Samaj Party founder and messiah of Dalits Kanshi Ram.

About 60 villagers of perennially-backward river locked Taradipal, Andira, Amrutamani and Penthapala, under Pattamundai block of Kendrapara district, had tonsured their heads yesterday to observe the 10th day of the demise of their leader as per the Hindu customs.

The local Dalit Sangh also observed the 10th day of the demise of their leader. They also organised a condolence meeting and paid floral tributes to the departed leader.

Later, a community feast was organised in the area attended by than 500 people. Money was collected from each household for the said purpose, said Biranchi Nayak, a member of the Dalit Sangh.
