Taylor does the trick as Windies upset Australia by 10 runs
Mumbai, Oct 18 (UNI) A fine bowling performance by pace bowler Jerome Taylor, which included a hat-trick, gave Windies an upset 10-run victory over World champs Australia in their Group 'A' match in the Champions Trophy played at the Brabourne stadium here today.
Adam Gilchrist, with an uncharacteristic 92 from 120 balls, along with Michael Clarke, put on 101 runs for the fifth wicket and looked like taking the Aussies home, but a run out, that of Gilchrist for 92, set a collapse with five wickets falling for 37 runs to give West Indies a great start.
Australia finished with 224 for nine in their 50 overs to give West Indies the win.
Set a target of 235 on a pitch which held up well except for the odd ball turning and keeping low, the Australians made heavy weather of the task as they lost four early wickets and barring the partnership between Gilchrist and Clarke, the West Indies always looked like they were going to win today.
Taylor ended with 4 for 49, while spinners Samuels and Gayle gave away just 75 runs between them in their 20 overs to squeeze the Australians in the mid innings, with Gayle also getting the important breakthrough of Symonds.
Earlier, Brian Lara (71) and Runako Morton (90 not out) put the Australian attack to the sword as they rescued their team from a precarious 63 for 4 to finally end with a respectable score of 234 for six wickets.
Batting first after winning the toss, the top order West Indian batsmen once again could not convert the start they got with Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan promising much, before being dismissed for 24 and 21 respectively to put West Indies in a tight spot at 63 for four.
