Centre moots fencing of Indo-Bangladesh border
Aizawl, Oct 18: A recent high-level meeting of the Union Government discussed fencing of the international India-Bangladesh border, among other things, in the wake of a rise in infiltration along the porous terrain.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Minister DoNER P R Kyndiah and Home Secretary V K Duggal attended the high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, besides top officials of various ministries, official sources informed here today.
The issue of unabated influx from across the border from Bangladesh and the progress of the fencing project were also reviewed during the meeting.
''The use of the porous Indo-Bangladesh borders by Kashmiri militants and jehadis to cross into India has shifted the focus onto sealing of the international border and keeping extra vigilance,'' the official sources said.
Various development schemes, being implemented by DoNER and role of the North Eastern Council(NEC), were discussed at length along with the implementation of the Assam Accord, the sources said.
The Prime Minister, the sources added, was keen on early implementation of the accord within a specific time frame. The MHA officials explained to Dr Singh about the implementation of the pending clauses, including preparation of the National Register of Citizens, the sources added.
