Union, state governments fail to control prices: Atwal

Hoshiarpur, Oct 17 (UNI) Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal criticised the Union government as well as state governments for their failure in controlling the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities The Deputy Speaker while talking to reporters here yesterday said these governments had badly failed to delivere the essential commodities to general public at reasonable rates. These governments had also remained ineffective in providing qualitative education and medical facilities to the citizens of the country, he added.

Mr Atwal said it was the first and foremost duty of any government to provide essential goods at cheap rates, free and qualitative education and modern health facilities to the citizens, but all the governments in the country had turned a deaf ear towards the above said issues and to overcome these problems, governments should check the black marketeers and hoarders.

Governments should stress on job oriented education to tackle the problem of unemployment, he suggested.

Mr Atwal said that he had requested NRIs, including Sir Swaraj Paul, Mr Darshan Singh Dhaliwal and Mr Sant Singh Chhatwal to adopt schools in their respective villages in India to provide basic infrastructure and teaching staff to educate the poor children as government had failed to do so.

He had suggested the NRIs to donate at least Rs 10 to 30 lakh each and deposit the same in their respective village bank branches, so that with the interest of their capital deposit, expenses including salaries of teachers could be met.

He claimed that about 150 NRIs had conceded to his request and would adopt their respective villages in near future.

Later Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal inaugurated the four days Punjab University Youth and Heritage Festival of Hoshiarpur Zone-A at local S D College.
