Pakistan to abide by sanctions against DPR Korea

Islamabad, Oct 16 (UNI) Pakistan today called for resumption of the six-party talks to peacefully resolve the problem in the Korean Peninsula even as it agreed to abide by the United Nations sanctions imposed against Pyongyang.

''However, as a responsible member of the international community, we will abide by the United Nations sanctions against Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK),'' Foreign ministry spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told a press conference in Islamabad.

Pakistan was among several countries, which had deplored nuclear test by the DPR Korea early last week and described it as a destabilising development for the entire region.

''We regret that the situation on the Peninsula has come to a stage where UN adopted the resolution and imposed sanctions,'' she said.

However, she said, sanction was not an end in itself and that was why Islamabad wanted resumption of the six-party talks in line with its continued support to a negotiated, peaceful resolution to the issue.

The Spokesperson stated that Pakistan would continue to maintain its relations with Pyongyong in areas not covered under the sanctions.

''We have deplored it (nuclear test), but we do have diplomatic, political and trade relations with North Korea,'' she said.
