Dengue claims 98 lives, Chikungunya surfaces in Ahmedabad

New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) Dengue has claimed 98 lives while a total of 5418 cases have been reported from across the country while a number of cases of chikungunya have been reported from Gujarat during the past 24 hours.

According the Union Health Ministry, Delhi, NCR and other neighbouring states have reported a total of 1548 dengue cases with 27 deaths. Of these, 982 cases have been reported from Delhi, while 566 cases from the NCR and other states. The 566 cases from outside Delhi include 173 from Haryana, 303 from Uttar Pradesh, 14 cases from Rajasthan and 76 from others state.

During the past 24 hours, 95 new cases of dengue with two deaths have been reported, ministry sources said. There has been no decline in the dengue cases during the past 10 day, they said and added that vector density is being analysed and action taken to check the growth of mosquitols which cause the disease.

Even the non-endemic states have started taking action check mosquito breeding to prevent dengue and chikungunya, they added.

Apart from Delhi, the maximum number of dengue cases have been reported from Kerala (794), followed by Rajasthan (697), Gujarat (443), West Bengal (429),Uttar Pradesh (418).Tamil Nadu (307), Punjab (250), Maharashtra (240), Haryana (167), Karnataka (90) and Andhra Pradesh (35).

Regarding Chikungunya, they said till today 13,57,920 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the country. About 246 suspected cases have been reported from Gujarat especially Ahmedabad and Surat.

A total of 1625 cases of chikungunya have been confirmed in the country but no death have been reported from India. In Delhi 173 suspected cases of Chikungunya have been reported, of which 24 have been confirmed.

The maximum number of confirmed Chikungunya cases have been reported from Maharashtra (679) followed by Karnataka (294), Andhra Pradesh (248), Gujarat (145), Tamil Nadu (111), Madhya Pradesh (62), Kerala (38) and Punducherry (9).

Meawnhile, railways and MCD have launched massive drive to control mosquito breeding the railway colony of central Delhi as the vector density was been found to be very high in the area.
