Meghalaya transporters threaten 24-hour road blockade
Shillong, Oct 15 (UNI) The transporters in Meghalaya have threatened to call a 24-hour road blockade across the state if the government failed to concede its demand of temporarily suspending the issuing of high security registration of number plates to vehicles owners.
The Joint Action Co-ordination Committee, a platform of the trasnporters, convener Augustine Shanpru told reporters here that they would be forced to call road-blockade on October 25, if the demand was not materialised.
The JACC was against the implementation of high security registration of number plates due to exorbitant rate of the HSRP when compared to other states in the country. Pointing out that the rate of issuing such number plates in Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh was Rs 425 for two and three wheelers, Rs 460 for light vehicles and Rs 825 for medium vehicles.
The Meghalaya government has fixed the rate of Rs 900 for two wheelers and Rs 1900 for four wheelers. ''If the government fails to comply with our demands within October 24, we have no option but to go ahead with our proposed agitation,'' the JACC Convener said.
Earlier, the state government has decided to implement the high security registration number plates here. The government clarified that the comparison did not arise as the scheme was yet to be implemented in states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur and Assam.
