CBI court resumes hearing against Amarinder's man

Patiala, Oct 14 (UNI) A special CBI court here today resumed proceedings against Madanjit Singh, a liaison officer of Punjab, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, and three police officials regarding the alleged illegal detention and disappearance of two brothers.

The defence counsel today cross examined the statement of Dharam Singh, the father of the two brothers, Balwinder Singh and Gurinder Singh of Patiala, who disappeared after their alleged illegal detention at the Civil Lines police station in 1993.

S S Kler, a defence lawyer, today appeared for MadanJit Singh.

Besides MadanJit Singh Ajaib Singh Kaleka, both Superintendents of Police, and two assistant sub-inspectors Shyam Lal and Hazoor Singh were also present.

Dharam Singh said during the cross examination he could not deny the fact that he had named MadanJit Singh as an accused in this case for the first time on August 28, 2006.

His statement that he has informed the court that Joginder Singh took him to State Bank of Patiala for encashment of FDRs of Rs 50000 and took away the money for the safe release of his sons in March 1993, the defence confronted and said that he had not recorded this statement earlier.

The cross examination will resume on November 11.

A case was registered in the beginning against five policemen, including inspector Joginder Singh, who expired during the course of investigation.

The CBI had chargesheeted the cops for the illegal detention of Balwinder Singh and Gurinder Singh of Patiala at Civil Lines police station in 1993.

The CBI had accused Madanjit and Kaleka of taking the two youths to an undisclosed place and later declaring them proclaimed offenders.

The alleged disappearance of the two youth had come to light when their father Dharma Singh filed a petition in Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1994.

The High Court had referred the case to Sangrur district and sessions judge, ordered an inquiry that was conducted by ADGP D S Bhullar and ADGP B P Tiwari.
